General Health

NSW Health advises that anyone including those training or participating in the City2Surf, who is unwell with influenza-like symptoms (including fever, chills, sore throat, cough, tiredness, muscle aches, headache or shortness of breath) or any other illness between now and on the day of the City2Surf should stay at home and avoid close contact with others until their symptoms are gone.

People who are unwell in the next few weeks for any reason are strongly advised to re-assess their participation in the event and should talk to their doctor if they have any questions.

It is important for all participants to remember to properly hydrate with fluids before, during and after the race. August weather can be unseasonably cool or warm and all participants and spectators should dress appropriately for the conditions. Unlike cotton, many synthetic fabrics will dry quickly and keep you warm when wet.

Course details

The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac is 14km in distance starting from the intersection of Park and College Sts in Sydney’s CBD before heading up William St and through the tunnel at Kings Cross. The course continues along New South Head Rd through Rose Bay, then up “Heartbreak Hill” (the halfway point) and also the toughest part of the course.

The City2Surf finish line is located on Queen Elizabeth Dr at the southern end of Bondi Pavilion.

Motivation

1.  Start out slow.
When you start your day, you’ll feel strong and confident, but you must keep telling yourself to hold back. Running your first half slower than the second half is the key to running a smart and enjoyable race. Your body will thank you during the second half of your race. Especially on the hills.

2. Run your own race.
Don’t be worried if you see a lot of people passing you. They may be starting out way too fast, so you’ll catch them later — at your own pace. Remember the story of the Tortoise and the Hare?

3. Be mentally tough.
Your mental toughness will really start to be tested during the later part of the race. Don’t give in to periods of self-doubt and discomfort. Remember all the training that you have done and have faith in it. Think about how hard you have worked and how rewarding it will be to complete your half marathon.

4. Think outside the body.
Chances are you will be feeling a little bit of pain during the race. You will certainly feel tired. Let your mind take over from your body and try to focus on the outside — the spectators, the other runners, the supporters, the beautiful Sydney scenery.

5. Set small goals.
Continue to break up the course, bit by bit. Start counting down the kilometres then the minutes. It’ll just fly by.

6. Enjoy Your Day.
This is the most important part and often the most overlooked part of racing. Smile, chat with your fellow runners, acknowledge the spectators and volunteers that are helping you through your day.

Good luck 2 everyone & remember… it’s funner with a runner!

The Goss!
